Bukola Saraki The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has held a former president of the Nigerian Senate, Bukola Saraki,in custody over allegations of theft and money laundering. Mr Saraki, a former Kwara State governor, was detained on Saturday, sources familiar with the development said, a situation that may trigger another episode of troubles for the politician. As senate president between 2015 and 2019, Mr Saraki spent a considerable time facing allegations of corruption and false declaration of assets. He was acquitted by the Supreme Court in June 2018. Abba Kyari The Police Service Commission (PSC) has stated that here is no formal report on Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari over his alleged involvement in Ramon Olorunwa Abbas aka Hushpuppi fraud case with the commission. Covid-19: Infections Surge As Nigeria As NCDC Records 1,683 Cases In 3 Days

There is a COVID-19 infections surge in Nigeria after the country recorded more than 500 COVID-19 cases in daily figures for the third time on Friday. The government is struggling to deal with a new and more infectious variant of the virus, the Delta Variant. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said figures on Saturday morning showed another 590 cases were reported. On July 28, some 535 cases were reported, 558 were registered on July 29, and 590 cases were logged on July 30, which is now the biggest daily increase in the country since March 4, 2021, when 708 cases were registered. According to the NCDC, the number of cases is rising, so is the country’s testing capacity since the peak of the first wave last year. The NCDC said that the new daily tally of 558 on Thursday has now been overtaken by Friday’s 590 cases and these have raised the total infections in the country to 173,411. The Lagos State Government has shut down the nation’s largest auto spare part market, Ladipo Market, in Mushin Local Government Area of the state indefinitely. The government accused the traders of contravening repeated environmental warnings against indiscriminate dumping of junk auto parts. The order from government was carried out by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) which sealed the market in the early hours of yesterday. Closure of the market was confirmed through a statement by Assistant Director of Public Affairs for LAWMA, Hakeem Akinleye, who lamented that the deplorable state of the environment within and around the market is appalling. According to LAWMA, the market would remain shut until the traders turned a new leaf by adhering to the environmental laws that were put in place to protect the environment and residents. It appealed to other markets and business centres in Lagos to shun indiscriminate dumping of refuse and other related environmental offences

Flood Cuts Off Bauchi-Kano Highway, Kills 3

Three people reportedly drowned while the road linking Bauchi to Kano was cut off after a heavy downpour that flooded the Kwanar Mulka bridge in Ningi Local Government of Bauchi State. An eyewitness and resident of Kwanar Mulka, Ahmadu Abdullahi, told Daily Trust that the incident happened early in the morning of Friday following torrential rain that made the river overflow its bank, cutting off the highway. “A bus conveying six passengers fell into the side of the road that was cut off. Two women out of the six persons in the vehicle drowned and the remaining four were rescued. Until now, the two women are still missing. One person also drowned beside the bridge and his body is still yet to be found. The deceased, Rachael Oniga Reports just filtered in that popular Nollywood actress, Racheal Oniga, is dead. She was 64 year-old. The news is coming at a time the movie industry is grappling with mixed issues and after mourning the death of another entertainer, Sound Sultan, who passed on early this month. The cause of Oniga’s death was unknown at the time of this report. Oniga, who was a veteran actress, featured in over a hundred movies. She began her acting career in 1993, shortly after her divorce. She worked briefly at Ascoline Nigeria Limited, a Dutch Consultant Company before her first movie titled Onome and her debut Yoruba movie was Owo Blow. Over the years, Oniga has featured in notable Nigerian films such as Sango, a movie scripted by Wale Ogunyemi, produced and directed by Obafemi Lasode  and Wale Adenuga’s television series, Super story. WAEC West Examinations Council (WAEC) says late registration of candidates by schools, for its West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), would no longer be allowed, beginning from 2022. The Head of National Office (HNO) of WAEC, Mr Patrick Areghan, made this known in an interview with newsmen on Friday in Lagos. Areghan spoke against the backdrop of late registration of candidates by some schools in an alleged bid to shop for external candidates. The HNO warned that there would be no going back on deadlines set by the council for the registration of school candidates, henceforth. According to him, there is a need for school owners to respect deadlines for upload of their candidates’ details for the examination. 1,000 Hunters Join Counterinsurgency Campaigns In Borno

A total of 1,000 local hunters in Borno State yesterday agreed to join other volunteer security groups in the fight against insurgency. The state Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, chaired the induction of the hunters at Gongulong ward, weeks after each of them completed security vetting by the Department of State Service (DSS) and the military. The hunters are expected to provide dedicated protection to farmers in the outskirts of Jere, where over 70 farmers were killed in November 2020 as well as farms in parts of Maiduguri Metropolis, Konduga and Mafa Local Government Areas. COVID-19 – Again, UAE Extends Travel Ban Against Nigeria, South Africa

Emirates Airline has extended the suspension of its flights from Nigeria to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to at least August 7. Suspension of flights from South Africa to UAE will also remain in place until the same date. Recall that the initial suspension of flights was scheduled to end on July 31. “Affected flight bookings have been cancelled,” the airline said in a statement on its website. Emirates said its decision was in line with the UAE government’s directives restricting entry of travellers originating from the two countries.
