The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has condemned the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari and his vice, Yemi Osinbajo at the funeral of late President Shehu Shagari. The opposition in a statement on Monday said it is highly “unpardonable and a very wrong precedence in our national protocol,” for Buhari to have missed the funeral of Nigeria’s first executive president. Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has debunked claims by senate president, Bukola Saraki, that he (Saraki) donated N10 million to victims of last April Offa robbery. UNICEF says 25,685 babies will be born in Nigeria tomorrow  TheUnited Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has estimated that 25,685 babies would be born in Nigeria on New Year Day. Pernille Ironside, UNICEF Nigeria’s Acting Representative revealed this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja. He said that the figure placed the country’s babies as making up 6.5 per cent of the estimated 395,072 babies that would be born on the day globally. Ironside noted that within Africa, Nigerian babies would account for almost 40 per cent of all those born in West and Central Africa, and more than 23 per cent of those born in sub-Saharan Africa. “Globally, over half of the world’s births are estimated to take place in just eight countries, including Nigeria. ”Others are: India 69,944, China 44,940 Pakistan 15,112, Indonesia 13,256, United States 11,086, the Democratic Republic of Congo 10,053 and Bangladesh 8,428.” According to him, on current life

The Nigerian Army has distanced itself from the recent video of a soldier complaining about the lack of weapons to fight Boko Haram. In a video shared by Reno Omokri on twitter, a group of Nigerian soldiers were seeing leaving their stations. The soldier who made the video said they were heading home to celebrate the New Year with them as they cannot continue to risk their lives. Reacting to the video, the Nigerian Army says the video is not a reflect of the true state of soldiers prosecuting the war against Boko Haram. Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have arrested a 15-year-old Senior Secondary School pupil, Precious Ehiedo, and two others, Juliet Ogben and Favour Okoh, for allegedly stealing and selling two siblings between the ages of two and seven for N800,000. The state Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galadanchi, who handed over one of the recovered children to their parents , said the teenager had requested money from her parents for the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination registration, but the parents allegedly told her to steal the children in order to raise the money.
